City of Canterbury

Located in the magnificent city of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, only 17 kilometres south-west of the CBD, the City of Canterbury is a treasure chest full of exotic foods, unique shops and diverse cultures.

Recruiting environmental champions! Earthworks Course – 2 May

The Mayor of the City of Canterbury, Cr Robert Furolo MP, is calling on local residents to learn about practical sustainable skills for the home and garden by getting involved in the next Earthworks Waste Education Course.
"Living sustainably is becoming increasingly important as we seek to preserve our precious resources and safeguard our environment for future generations," Mayor Robert Furolo said.

"When rubbish is collected on a weekly basis, residents tend not to think of food waste as having an adverse impact on the environment.

"But, food and other organic wastes disposed of in landfill generate greenhouse gas emissions with 21 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide.

"Maximising our waste reduction and promoting recycling is instrumental in living sustainably and reducing our carbon footprint.

"That's why I'm encouraging residents to attend our next Earthworks Waste Education Course, which is a five week course held every Monday beginning 2nd May.

"The course is an interesting, interactive and hands-on course that helps people understand how we can divert more domestic waste away from landfill and live more sustainably in our daily lives.

"Residents will learn how to reduce, reuse and recycle waste, and also learn about worm farming, composting, no dig gardens, the waste hierarchy, living sustainably and cleaning without chemicals at home.

"Helping the environment is easier then most people think and by making small changes in your day to day life, you can make a massive contribution to helping the environment.

"Participants walk away with a lot of new and interesting knowledge and start spreading the word to their family, friends and neighbours.

"Being an Environmental Champion means taking responsibility for and looking after the environment for ourselves, our families and friends, and I encourage residents to do that by taking part in the Earthworks course," Mayor Robert Furolo said.

Earthworks is open to all residents in the City of Canterbury. The five week course will run on Monday mornings beginning 2 May at the Carrington Centre, 2 Carrington Sq, Campsie. Participants receive either a FREE compost bin or worm farm upon completion of the course. Earthworks is a FREE course, but bookings are essential. For bookings and further information phone our Waste Education Officer on 9789 9485.
