The Mayor of the City of Canterbury, Cr Robert Furolo MP, is urging residents to do their part for the environment by recycling their pre-loved mobile phones between 1st June and 30th September.
"Mobile Phones have fast become one of life's most important communication tools," said Mayor Robert Furolo.
"Due to ongoing innovation and technological advances, the typical life span of a mobile phone is now much less than 18 months.
"In fact, it is estimated that there are over 19 million handsets stashed in people's drawers at work and homes around Australia.
"But what do you do with your phone when you're ready to upgrade? The answer of course, is to recycle.
"By recycling your old mobiles you are keeping them out of landfill, ensuring the materials in the phones are being reused and you're reducing the amount of greenhouse gases emitted.
"And recycling your old mobile phone really is easy.
"Simply take your old unwanted mobile phone, batteries, chargers and handsets to Council's Administration Centre, 137 Beamish Street, Campsie and Campsie Library, Amy Street, Campsie, and recycle them in the mobile muster bins in the foyer.
"Program facilitators, MobileMuster and Landcare Australia are aiming to collect 250,000 handsets plus their accessories across the country.
"Over 90% of the metals and plastics from the old mobile phones will be recycled and used to make new products like stainless steel, fence posts and jewellery
"They'll then provide up to 25 grants of $2,000 each to coast care groups around Australia to plant up to 25,000 trees, shrubs and grasses that will regenerate and protect our precious coastline.
"It is important residents don't throw mobiles in the rubbish, where heavy metals like cadmium and lead can end up in landfill.
"This is a great way to help our environment by keeping old mobiles out of landfill and regenerating our coastline all at the same time," said Mayor Robert Furolo.
