The Mayor of the City of Canterbury, Cr Robert Furolo MP, is encouraging young people to learn the basics of managing money and planning for a brighter future at the upcoming Money Savvy Workshop, Wednesday 15 June.
"Young people face increasingly complex financial challenges, so it's important they learn how to take control of their finances at an early age," said Mayor Robert Furolo.
"Money Savvy is an early intervention financial education program, which specifically targets young people who are experiencing financial difficulties.
"The workshop offers young people a hands-on learning experience on topics of vital importance to the responsible management of personal finances and teaches them money management skills for life.
"The aim of the workshop is to increase young people's financial literacy skills, enabling them to make informed decisions regarding spending behaviour.
"Participants will learn how to spend money wisely, and to better understand the difference between needs and wants in life.
"They'll also learn all about avoiding debt and financial distress, which is becoming increasingly common, due to excessive credit card and mobile phone usage.
"And, they'll learn about making money and planning for the future by developing strategies tailors to their own individual financial situation.
"The workshop will be hosted by Belmore Youth Resource Centre and facilitated by trained YWCA NSW staff.
"And of course, no financial products or services are promoted in the workshop.
"I encourage young people in the community to attend the Money Savvy Workshop, it's a great opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to manage their finances throughout life." said Mayor Robert Furolo.
